Foods and drinks to maintain good teeth health
Calcium rich foods: Dairy products are high in calcium and phosphorous content. They strengthen the layer of tooth enamel. This protects teeth from decay as these foods are low in acidity.
Calcium rich foods help in maintaining pH balance of the teeth. Milk, yogurt, cheese and other milk products, when taken in unsweetened form are good for the teeth. Chicken, nuts and other calcium rich foods also provide similar results.
Protein rich foods: Proteins are required for gum development and for preventing bleeding gums and other gum related diseases. Protein is also great to strengthen teeth. Some of the food choices that are rich in protein are meat, whole grains, cereals, eggs, soy products and tofu.

Vitamin rich foods: Green leafs, vegetables and fruits are rich in vitamins, which are necessary for formation of tooth enamel. They protect teeth against decay, periodontal diseases and bacterial growth. Vitamins are essential for gum development as well.
Liquids: Liquids cleanse the oral cavity and prevent bacterial growth.They also keep the gums moist, thereby preventing excessive dryness which leads to other problems. Liquids promote secretion of saliva. Unsweetened tea, lots of warm water, milk and green tea are the best drinks to take.
Mineral rich foods:
- Onions and garlic, being rich in antioxidant properties and sulfur are excellent for killing germs in the mouth.
- Fruits such as banana, apricots, raisins, figs and dates are rich in potassium. However, when you eat banana, rinse your mouth because the fruit sticks to the teeth.
- You also need to include foods such as sea foods, molasses and legumes that are rich in copper and meat liver, mushrooms, sunflower seeds and spinach which are rich in zinc.
Turmeric: You can also add a pinch of turmeric when you cook. Turmeric, with its many antiseptic and antibacterial properties kills germs as well.
Chewing gum: Chewing sugarless gum can help in dislodging particles that are stuck to the teeth, promote saliva secretion and exercise the gums. However, avoid chewing for more than 15 minutes at a time and avoid mint flavored gums.
Foods and drinks to avoid
Sugars: Sugars are disastrous for teeth as they promote bacterial growth and lead to tooth decay, cavities, caries and other periodontal diseases. Sweet foods contain acids that destroy pH balance. However, this applies only to artificially produced sweeteners such as white sugar. Natural sweeteners are not as disastrous.You can have honey, pure cane sugar, molasses and fructose. Avoid cool drinks and aerated drinks.
Caffeine: Coffee can be very bad on the teeth. If you drink more than a cup of coffee per day, have a lot of other above mentioned pH restoring liquids and foods to keep up good oral health. In general, try and avoid any kind of food that is sticky because it lodges in gaps of teeth.
When you do eat them, never forget to rinse your mouth, preferably by a mouthwash. Gargle well.
