Date rape drugs are drugs that affect the central nervous system and make a girl helpless to an extent that she cannot defend herself against sexual abuse. They are usually mixed in drinks and given to unsuspecting girls; mostly by people whom they trust or are out on a date with.

The most common kind of date rape drugs are rohypnol, ketamine and gamma hydroxybutyric acid (GHB). They are known by a number of street names. Rophynol is known as roche, roachies, la rocha, circles, rib, rope, Mexican valium, forget pill, mind erasers and trip-and-fall. Ketamine is called Ket, Vitamin K, Special K, Keller Cat Valium, Super C, Purple and Kit Kat. Street names for GHB are Liquid G, Bodily Harm, Cherry Meth, Gamma 10, Somatomax, Liquid Ecstasy and Easy Lay.

Dangers of date rape drugs

  • The following reasons make these drugs highly dangerous in nature:
  • These drugs are nearly untraceable because they have no smell, taste and color.
  • It is very easy to administer them to an unsuspecting person with a drugged drink.
  • They are easily soluble in almost all liquids.
  • All traces of drugs are flushed out of the body within 72 hours and blood or urine tests cannot reveal their presence unless the tester carefully looks for them.
  • They are fast acting and leave no memory in the victim’s mind of the occurrence when in the state of inebriation.

In essence, these drugs aid the rapist get away neatly. Finally, these drugs are very easily available on the streets and they are very cheap. So, anybody can get hold of them, if they have a source.

Effects of date rape drugs

GHB causes side effects such as drowsiness, nausea, unconsciousness, low heart rate and no remembrance of occurrence. Overdose of GHB can cause severe ***seizures***, coma and death as well.

Ketamine causes hallucinations, loss of coordination between mind and body, ***convulsion***, aggression, and unconsciousness. The severest symptom is failure of respiratory system.

Rohypnol causes dropped blood pressure, inability to talk normally, fogging or blurring of vision, severe drowsiness, nausea and inability to control muscular movements.

Protect yourself by being guarded

The only way you can defend yourself against these drugs is by keeping your guards up, especially when you are on a new date or in public. Avoid going on blind dates and if you do,
never accept opened cans of drinks,

  • do not leave your drink unfinished if you need to use the washroom and
  • do not accept drinks that are not mixed in front of you.
  • Never leave your drink unattended.
  • You can be the safest if you attend parties in groups so that group members can keep a lookout for each other.
  • Spread word about date rape drugs so that all your friends are aware of precautions and can identify symptoms.

If you do suffer such abuse, rush to the hospital. Take care not to cleanse yourself because it wipes out important evidences. Try and control urination until urine can be collected for testing. Relate everything you remember to the authorities.
