Effects of dominant estrogen levels in blood and ways to control the condition
Estrogen is a steroidal sex hormone responsible for maintaining the estrous cycle in female mammals. Estrogen dominance occures when the level of estrogen in the blood is far greater than the level of progesterone.
Women that are estrogen dominant don’t necessarily imply that they have high estrogen levels. Sometimes, even when a woman has low estrogen content in her blood can be diagnosed with estrogen dominance due to low amounts of progesterone. Thus this condition is comparative and relative in nature.
The Johns Hopkins University conducted a 20 year study, published in 1983 in the American Journal of Epidemiology, showing that women who had good progesterone levels had less than a fifth of the amount of breast cancer.
According to the late Dr Lee, two studies published in the American Journal of Pathology in 1999 show that estrogen increases breast and prostate cancer.
Estrogen dominance may occur as a result of Xenoestrogens that are nothing but substances or chemicals that stimulate estrogen dominance. Spermicides, condoms, vaginal jellies, cosmetics, pesticides, diaphragm, plastics detergents are a few examples.
Treatment for this condition generally aims at maintaining the balance of both the hormones.
Signs and symptom
Depression, allergies, dry eyes, insomnia, hypoglycemia, fibrotic breasts, low libido, water retention, PMS, uterine cancer, headache, gall bladder disease, fatigue, foggy thinking, hair loss, weight gain around the abdomen etc are the common signs and symptoms associated with estrogen dominance.
Generally used treatment options for estrogen dominance are mentioned below.
Supplements: Vitamin B-50 is essential for maintaing the hormonal balance of the body. Hence dietary supplements of Vitamin B are recommended. Also, magnesium is known to play a vital role in transport of oxygen and enzyme reaction. Zinc reduces stress, boosts mood and sexual function and aids hormonal balance.
Herbal remedies: Myomin, a Chinese herb is very beneficial for normalizing the estrogen dominance. DIM is a phytonutrient that is found in various cruciferous vegetables. This nutrient regulates healthy hormonal balance thus helping in estrogen metabolism. Wild yam contains a compound diosgenin which has active progesterone properties.
Detoxification: Detoxification is essential to treat hormonal imbalance as in case the hormones are not detoxified, they may circulate in the body. Calcium D-glucarate found in most fruits and vegetable aid the detoxification of body and prevents the hormones from getting reabsorbed in the blood. They also support liver function. These treatment methods in general try to reverse the symptoms associated with estrogen dominance by balancing excess estrogen by natural progesterone.
