Detecting abuse is the first step towards stopping it. Many being abused often take a long time before realizing they are being abused. Men, women, children and even elderly people can become victims of abuse.

Detecting abuse is the first step towards stopping it. Many being abused often take a long time before realizing they are being abused. Men, women, children and even elderly people can become victims of abuse.

Recognizing the types and symptoms of abuse and seeking intervention, is the best way to deal with it. By educating yourself about the types of abuse, you can bring a huge change not only in your life, but, also in the lives of others. Life is precious and everyone has the right to lead it peacefully.

There are several types of abuse. There can be physical violence, negligence, sexual abuse or emotional harassment. Even self inflicted injury is abuse.

Women have been found to initiate physical violence against their partners as much as men.

Domestic abuse: This form of abuse is also termed as spousal abuse. It manifests when an individual involved in any intimate relationship exercises complete control over the partner. This can happen in a marriage or a relationship; live in or otherwise. If domestic abuse is accompanied with physical violence, it is referred to as domestic violence. Both men and women can become victims of this abuse. Verbal and emotional abuse both are a part of this form of abuse.

Child abuse: Children become prey to this type of abuse. It takes the form of physical abuse, child neglect and even emotional abuse. Physical abuse is visible, while emotional abuse leaves a permanent scar on the psyche of the child. Knowing more about child abuse and its disastrous effect you can help an abused child lead a normal life free of pain and trauma.

Bullying: This type of abuse affects both adults as well as kids. It can result in depression, anger, frustration and fear. Those who bully others suffer from psychological problems of their own. This problem has gained impetus with the advancement of technology. Cyber-bullying has become quite common these days. It is done via email, cell phones, texts and also by social media websites. It is done round the clock. You have to find out the reason as to why some children get bullied and why kids bully them. This way you will be able to counsel them better and instill a feeling of confidence in them.

Self inflicted injury: This is another abuse that a person inflicts upon oneself. It is done as a way to escape or cope with crisis. It stems out of immense stress, depression and anxiety in a person’s life. If not dealt timely and with care, this often becomes an addiction. Such people need to be counseled, that problems are a part and parcel of every one’s life and that self destruction is not the way out.

Abuse of senior citizens: There are times when the elderly are not taken proper care of by their caregivers. They are tortured emotionally and sometimes even physically. At times they robbed financially also. It is very essential that we identify the symptoms of abuse that the elderly are being subjected to and act accordingly. It is vital to create awareness among the younger generation about this form of abuse as well.

What’s most important is to identify abuse. One must realize when one is being abused or anyone else is being abused or worse still are we subjecting someone to abuse, maybe subconsciously? It’s when abuse is identified that corrective action becomes possible and even though the path to complete recovery might not be that easy; it’s not impossible either.
