By far condoms and vasectomy are the only two known methods of contraception for men. While vasectomy is a contraceptive procedure performed on men; condoms are externally wearable means of contraception, which can be used and thrown on need basis.

Male condoms are made of a thin sheath of polyurethane, latex rubber or polysioprene (non  latex natural rubber). They are available over the counter and are worn over the male sex organ before intercourse. Condoms work by collecting the human semen and thereby, preventing sperm from coming in contact with a female egg inside the vagina. They also prevent bacteria from Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs), to come in contact with the partner’s skin and spread infection.

Trivia on Condoms:

The effectiveness of a condom varies from 85 to 98 percent, depending upon correctness of use.

Breakage rate of condoms is 2 percent.

Condoms are in use for over 400 years now.

For couples with one partner being HIV positive, consistent and correct use of condoms showed infection rate to be just 1 percent.

All condoms expire anytime between two to five years after purchase.

Out of all those using condoms during their first year, only 3 percent learn to use them correctly and consistently.

Condoms are manufactured in different lengths, widths and thicknesses with sizes to choose from. There are many varieties of condoms available in the market. Some of these are:

  • Transparent or opaque.
  • Dry or powdered.
  • Studded, ribbed or textured.
  • Flavored.
  • Lubricated with or without spermacide and non-lubricated condoms.

Male condoms have a number of advantages. These are:

  • They are  inexpensive and available over the counter or through condom vending machines.
  • They  can be used along with other methods of contraception.
  • They  are lightweight and disposable.
  • They also help in preventing STDs.
  • There are of course some disadvantages related to condom usage. Some of these are:
  • The main disadvantage is that to some men and women condoms  intervene with sexual pleasure.
  • Some men are unable to  retain erection after slipping on the condom.
  •  Preplanning, accessibility and stocking up remains an issue with condoms.
  • Condoms are not a 100 percent effective and safe method of contraception.

However, if care is taken it is possible to overcome these disadvantages to quite an extent. Some important points to keep in mind while using condoms are:

  • For lubricated condoms, water based lubricants should be used.
  • Avoid Using any oil or petroleum based product, as that would affect the safety of condoms.
  • Do not ever use expired condoms as their effectiveness can be compromised.
  • Make sure the condom is not ruptured before or while using.
  • Condoms need to be worn before the penis comes in contact with the vagina for effective contraception.
  • It is also important to carefully remove the condom, immediately after ejaculation, to avoid spilling or rupturing.

It is good to know that despite the many draw backs condoms are still considered one of the safest and best contraceptives available I the market today.
