Kids love games and they love playing outdoors. However, on a number of occasions, such as rainy and snowy days, they are restricted indoors. Notwithstanding the climate outside, there are a number of activities that you can plan for your children indoors and be a part of them so that they get their share of excitement and fun no matter what.

Indulging in interesting indoor games gets your child’s mind off video games and television, thus preventing risk of video game addiction. Also, indulging in some playtime with your child strengthens the parent child bond. However, make sure what you plan is not just interesting and entertaining, but also safe for playing indoors.

Safe ball games

An excerpt taken from New Orleans Children’s Museum, Louisiana:

he gave me only puzzled looks.

I tried to teach my child with words;

they passed him by often unheard.

Despairingly, I turned aside;

"How shall I teach this child?" I cried.

Ball games are games that are usually played outdoors. However, with a little bit of innovation, these games can be safely played indoors. One of the best games is bowling. You can play bowling with identical plastic water bottles that are unbreakable. For the ball, choose a lightweight, sponge one that will not break or damage any other article in your home. You can also play catch by substituting balloons for balls. Create your own games and have loads of fun with this versatile plaything.

Create and play with puppets

Puppets are very easy to make. Use your imagination to create funny looking creatures. Make up stories and use the puppets as your characters. Pull the right strings, make puppets dance to your tunes and have a gala time with your child. You can also try some finger puppet sets available at all toy stores or a toy library near you.


Dance is great for health since it is one of the best forms of cardio exercises. Play a grooving tune and have a dance party. To add to the fun, make your child the leader and let everybody else follow his dance moves. Merriment does not get better than this.

Develop good reading and writing skills

When indoors, read out a story to your kids and let them re-write it in their own words. Modify this and let the kids cook up an original story, which they can read aloud with proper voice modulations and animated gestures. You can also help the kids; write a letter to their grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends so that their writing skills are brushed up. This not only enhances the imaginative and creative thinking in a child but also builds the power of expression.

Teamwork activities and games

Invite your child’s friends over and indulge them in some indoor group games. These could include competitive games as well as games that require the entire group to work as a team in order to complete them. Games such as treasure hunt, hula-hoop, crab race, frog race, and wheel barrow race are some good options to choose from. You can also give the kids a situation and let them act it out or better still, let them enact scenes from plays, imitate different people or animals., play and any other game that you can cook up.

Board Games

There are several good board games available in the market these days. Select the ones that will help in memory building, develop creativity, innovation and lateral thinking abilities in children.

Fitness sessions

Kids love to exercise with their parents. Teach them different exercises, yoga or aerobics that they can do indoors with you and see them look forward to a regular session with you every week.
